Have you ever wondered why the color of soil is mostly brown? What do you think gives the soil this color?
all in the world animals, plants, microorganisms and living things have different colors has.
Alright Why is most soil brown?
Soil is a complex structure consisting of different components.
Inside; Minerals resulting from the weathering of rocks, water, air, various gases, living organisms and organic matter formed by the decomposition of dead organisms, especially plants.
For this reason, it is possible to say that the color of the soil is closely related to its composition. As we said before, there are different minerals in the structure of the soil. For example, goethite, one of the iron minerals commonly found in soil, is yellow-brown, Hematite is red-black in color.
In addition, calcium carbonate, also known as calcium carbonate, is very common in soil. Calcite is a white translucent mineral. The second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust is white-gray quartz.
The main reason why the soil is brown is the organic substances in its composition.
Dead plant and other organism residues in the soil are broken down by microorganisms It is converted into simpler chemical substances.
The mixture consisting of these substances is called humus. It has a high carbon content Humus is dark brown and is in the upper layers of the soil.
In the deeper layers of the soil, the amount of humus is less and the colors of the minerals in the soil are more distinct in these layers. As a result, what color the soil appears, It is related to the ratios of the substances in its composition.
But of course there are also different colored soils.
For example, terra-rosa is seen in the south of the Marmara region, the Aegean and the Mediterranean regions. In other words Red colored Mediterranean soil is due to the organic matter accumulated in its structure. It has this color.
Again, chernesia occurs in the Erzurum-Kars plateau and areas such as Kars, Göle, Sarıkamış, where the harsh continental climate is experienced in Turkey. It has a color close to black. Additionally, there are many other soil types that have various shades of brown.
