Windows 11 has experienced another decline in market share. In this context, the operating system is having difficulty maintaining the momentum it gained a few months ago. According to the latest data from Statcounter, Windows 11’s market share has decreased by more than 1.5 percent in the last two months of 2024.
Windows 11 market share fell in December
Windows 11 market share decreased from 34.94 percent to 34.1 percent in December, a decrease of 0.84 percent. The latest decline comes after Windows 11 rose to an all-time high market share of more than 35.5 percent following a surge in October.
Windows 10, on the other hand, managed to regain some of the users it lost, although there are less than 11 months left until official support ends. Statcounter data shows that Windows 10 currently has a market share of 62.73 percent, increasing by 0.9 percent.
The reasons behind Windows 11’s struggles are actually multifaceted. Many users are unable to upgrade to the new operating system due to hardware requirements. Microsoft did not make any concessions on these requirements, which led many users to remain with older Windows.
- Windows 10: 62.73 percent (+0.9 points)
- Windows 11: 34.1 percent (-0.84 points)
- Windows 7: 2.4 percent (-0.07 points)
- Windows 8.1: 0.29 percent (-0.02 points)
- Windows XP: 0.23 percent (-0.02 points)
There are alternative solutions for those who cannot officially switch to the new operating system. Microsoft offers an Extended Security Program that provides 12 months of updates for $30, while third-party tools like 0patch provide up to 5 years of extra support.
