Xiaomi announced that it has made significant changes to its bootloader unlocking policies, effective this year. This move aims to address growing security concerns and adapt to the declining popularity of custom ROMs. The new regulations impose restrictions on users who want to unlock the bootloader.
Xiaomi bootloader unlocking policies have changed
The most striking aspect of the new policy to be implemented by Xiaomi was the device limitation. Now users will be able to unlock the bootloader of only one device per Xiaomi account. Previously, up to three devices were allowed.
Additionally, users who receive permission to unlock the bootloader will have only 14 days (336 hours) to complete the entire process. The permission of users who cannot complete the transaction within this period will be canceled and the permission will not be extended or re-granted.
The application process has also been made more challenging. They will need to pass a tough exam designed to ensure that only experienced developers advance. The authentication process will also be strengthened. Real-name authentication and adherence to account-device pairing have become mandatory.
Xiaomi underlines that unlocking the bootloader may expose devices to security vulnerabilities and is not recommended for ordinary users. The company also stated that unlocked bootloader is mandatory to receive HyperOS updates.
Additionally, the company limited bootloader unlocking permissions to devices sold in China and said it would implement separate policies for international markets.
