Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced on Weibo that the new generation smartphone production factory in Beijing’s Changping district will be operational soon. The CEO also published a video introducing the factory in more detail.

This new factory is called the “dark factory” and will be able to operate without human intervention 24 hours a day. The machines in the factory will continue production by cooperating harmoniously among themselves. In addition, the factory can create a dust-free environment on its own with its micron level dust cleaning feature.

Production quality will be controlled by smart machines developed by Xiaomi. Allegedly, the production process is capable of producing a smartphone every second. According to what is stated in the promotional video, this smart factory is described as a small step taken by Xiaomi towards discovering the future, and this journey has just begun.

Xiaomi invested approximately $330 million in the development of this new production process. The new factory in Changping has a construction area of ​​81,000 square meters. This facility has received the “national smart manufacturing benchmark enterprise” certificate with an annual production capacity of 10 million flagship smartphones. The factory will produce Xiaomi’s upcoming foldable phones – Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 and Xiaomi MIX Flip.

However, Xiaomi has been using automation in the production process for some time. The Xiaomi smart factory in Beijing’s Yizhuang district was ready for production in 2019. According to previous reports, the production of the company’s first book-style foldable phone, the Xiaomi Mix Fold, was entirely carried out in the first phase of the smart factory in Yizhuang.
