In the statement made by the European Commission, it was announced that platforms such as Facebook, X and YouTube will now take more measures in the fight against hate speech. Other platforms that have signed up to this include Instagram, LinkedIn, Microsoft services, Dailymotion, Snapchat, Viber, TikTok and Twitch.
The EU Digital Services Act requires tech companies to do more to combat illegal and harmful content on their platforms. It is also expected that technology companies’ adherence to the updated rules will help enforce the law.
In line with the regulated rules, companies will be allowed to monitor how non-profit or public organizations review hate speech notifications and will evaluate at least two-thirds of these notifications they receive within 24 hours.
YouTube and similar platforms that serve a large audience will take many measures to reduce hate speech, including the use of automatic detection tools. Additionally, detailed data will be collected before these contents are removed. Platforms will categorize hate speech such as religion, language, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation.
US President Donald Trump signed a presidential decree temporarily postponing the TikTok ban. But the platform is not yet saved.
