AMD’s soon-to-be-released flagship desktop processor, Ryzen 9 9950X, draws attention with its impressive performance even before it is released. Early benchmark results show that this processor can reach boost clock speeds of up to 6GHz. Here’s what you need to know about AMD’s new processor.
Here’s what Ryzen 9 9950X early performance benchmarks look like
The benchmark results of Ryzen 9 9950X more than meet performance expectations. X (formerly Twitter) user @9950pro shared a Geekbench 6 result of a Ryzen 9 9950X engineering sample. Tested with the Asus ROG Crosshair X670E motherboard and 32GB DDR5 memory, the processor reached clock speeds of 5.95GHz, approximately 300 MHz above the stock maximum boost clock speed.
In these tests, the overclocked processor showed off its power by scoring 3,706 points in single-core performance and 26,047 points in multi-core performance.
A few weeks ago, an overclocking attempt of the Ryzen 9 9950X exceeding the 6GHz limit was successfully completed. AMD’s own overclocking team pushed this chip up to 6.75GHz, setting a world record with 53,557 points in Cinebench R23.
This achievement, along with achieving various other milestones, was achieved using liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling. However, LN2 cooling is not a practical method for daily consumer use.
Cooling and performance
The newly leaked Geekbench benchmark result suggests that the engineering sample was tested without using LN2 cooling.
Similar overclocking results up to 6GHz may be possible by using high-performance air cooling or all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooling solutions. However, it’s important to take these results with a degree of skepticism, because the Ryzen 9 9950X sample tested was an engineering sample. Performance and stability may vary in final consumer versions.
AMD announced that it has postponed the release of Ryzen 9000 series processors. Originally planned to be available on July 31, this new series will now be released in the first two weeks of August.
Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will be available on August 8, and Ryzen 9 9900X and Ryzen 9 9950X will be available on August 15. AMD stated that the reason for this delay was that the first production units shipped did not meet full quality expectations.
