A post published by Patreon yesterday. to the post according to; Apple has forced the platform to use the company’s in-app payment system since November. Patreon announced that if it does not take steps in this direction, it will face the risk of being kicked out of the App Store. In this context, Patreon memberships sold through the iOS application will soon be subject to the 30 percent commission that Apple applies to in-app purchases.
As part of this change, creators will need to switch to Patreon’s subscription billing method. Thus, creators will be able to continue making money through Patreon’s iOS application. With this method, Apple’s 30 percent commission will apply when a new membership is first purchased and each time it is renewed. Additionally, Patreon will give creators the option to automatically increase their prices in the iOS app. In this way, the company thinks that the new fee can balance its costs.
Starting November 4, 2024, the commission fee will only apply to memberships purchased through Patreon’s iOS app. In this sense, we should point out that existing subscriptions on Patreon will not be affected by this change. Likewise, memberships sold through Patreon’s website or Android app will not be affected. On the other hand, Patreon already has many platform fees. When Apple’s commission is added to this, content creators face a difficult situation.
According to Patreon; Creators can choose to cover the App Store commission themselves. Otherwise, new transactions on the Patreon iOS app will be more expensive than the same purchase on the web due to Apple’s App Store Fee.
By the way, it should be noted that some content producers may postpone the transition to the new billing method until November 2025. But in this case, he won’t be able to sell memberships in the iOS app once Apple’s requirements come into effect.
