Apple was sued for using harmful chemicals called PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) in the straps of some Apple Watch models. PFAS are so-called “forever chemicals” that can remain in the environment for long periods of time and are known for their harmful effects on health, which the European Union recently banned. Here are the details!
Apple Accused of Using PFAS in Apple Watch Bands
In the lawsuit filed in the US state of California, it was claimed that Apple used PFAS in some Apple Watch strap models. Although the company denied this and stated that it used fluoroelastomers in the production of the belts, the plaintiffs claim that this definition conceals the PFAS content.
PFAS for those who don’t know; It is a frequently preferred chemical due to its resistance to sweat, skin oil and lotions. However, when these substances come into contact with the skin for a long time, they can be absorbed by the body and cause harmful consequences. Scientific studies show that PFAS may increase the risk of cancer, suppress the immune system, and have harmful effects during pregnancy.
The case is based on a study conducted at the University of Notre Dame and published in December. According to the study, fitness trackers and smart watch straps contain high levels of PFAS. Within the scope of the research, 22 different belts were examined. Certain types of PFAS, such as perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), have been identified at more than 1,000 ppb in some belts.
The research says that among the products tested there were devices from brands such as Apple, Fitbit, Google and Samsung. However, it is unclear whether all of the Apple Watch bands named in the lawsuit were included in this study.
Apple’s New Phone Will Offer iPhone 16 Features at the Price of iPhone 13
It was claimed that Apple’s affordable phone, iPhone SE 4, will come with an OLED screen and Dynamic Island instead of a notch. Here are the iPhone SE 4 features!
The plaintiffs allege that Apple knew about the harmful effects of PFAS but failed to inform consumers about it. Apple published a document promising to remove PFAS from its products in 2022. While there is no official statement on the subject yet, it is worth underlining that Apple is one of the “sensitive” companies on such issues and that this incident may not be as claimed.
