Space One was its second attempt to become the first private company to put a satellite into orbit, after its first attempt in March ended in a mid-air explosion. The startup hopes to build a satellite launch service to meet growing global demand, emulating Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has contracts with NASA and the Pentagon. However, it has not yet successfully launched its Kairos rocket into orbit.
A step forward compared to the first test
In the launch test, the 18-meter Kairos rocket initially left the launch pad without any problems and exhibited a normal flight in the first minutes. However, from takeoff about two minutes later It was observed that the rocket lost directional control and began to rotate, leaving a spiral trail in the air.
While the Space One company confirmed in its statement that the launch failed, it did not provide detailed information about the technical glitch. Company officials, “We apologize to our customers and supporters for not being able to complete the mission successfully.” The company stated that they will investigate the cause of the problem as soon as possible and prepare for the next trial.
In this latest test, the rocket was launched by the Taiwan Space Agency and Japan-based companies Lagrapo, Space Cubics and Terra Space, as well as a total of 100 rockets belonging to an unnamed customer. It was carrying five small satellites. Company officials stated that they estimated that the failure may be caused by a problem in the guidance system or nozzle of the first stage engine.
“We do not see it as a failure”
In other news, Space One President Masakazu Toyoda In his statement to journalists, “We do not see this incident as a failure. We believe that the data and experience gained … are extremely valuable and will be useful in the next fight.” he said. This is a mentality that can lead to success.
The Kairos rocket was designed with three solid-fuel stages and one liquid-fuel “kick stage”. It is capable of placing 150-kilogram payloads into Sun-synchronous orbits or 250-kilogram payloads into a 500-kilometer, 33-degree inclined orbit. Space One aims to gain a foothold in the small satellite launch market with this rocket. It is not known when the company’s next launch will take place, but it is expected to take place in 2025.
