The Perseid meteor shower is starting! How to watch from Turkey?

On August 12, the skies of Türkiye will witness the Perseid meteor shower, one of the most impressive natural events of this year. Yandex Weather team also announced that the weather conditions on this date will be extremely suitable for observation.

How to watch the Perseid meteor shower?

It was stated that the sky will be clear and cloudless, and the temperatures will be high, especially in big cities such as Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Diyarbakır and Ankara. This provides an ideal opportunity to clearly watch the meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs when dusty particles left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet enter the Earth’s atmosphere and catch fire. This natural phenomenon, which takes place every year in August, reaches its highest intensity especially on the night of 12-13 August. On these dates, it will be possible to see between 60 and 100 meteors per hour. It is stated that the best time for observation is after midnight, especially between 02:00 and 04:00 in the morning.

It is predicted that weather conditions will be clear across Turkey due to a strong anticyclone effect and will provide a suitable environment for watching the meteor shower. Air temperatures are expected to be above 30°C in cities such as Izmir, Antalya, Adana, Gaziantep and Diyarbakır. It is estimated that the meteor shower can be clearly seen in Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Diyarbakır and Ankara. However, it is stated that observation may be difficult as the weather will be partly cloudy in Samsun.

For those who want to watch the meteor shower, the Yandex Weather team recommends choosing a dark area away from city lights and going to the observation point early so that the eyes can get used to the darkness. It is also recommended to purchase a mat or sun lounger for a comfortable viewing experience.
