The last few weeks have been a period full of bans for Türkiye. In our country, access to Wattpad was blocked last month, Instagram last week and Roblox as of yesterday. Moreover, it has been brought up many times that TikTok and other social media platforms are at risk.
While all this was going on, RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin signaled which platform or for what reason the next ban could be imposed. Accordingly, content channels with the concept of “Street Interviews”, which attracted great attention on YouTube and social media platforms, were put under the spotlight.
Street Interviews Were Focused on by RTÜK
Ironically, RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin, who often uses the X (Twitter) account to make official statements, announced that the concept of “street interviews” is under the spotlight. According to Şahin, the press acts against ethical values due to the manipulative aspects of “Street Interviews” broadcast on national television and social media.
Şahin also stated that these interviews were used to support certain views for economic or political purposes and were far from objectivity. He emphasized that such misleading content can lead to disinformation and sociological conflicts in society.
RTÜK announced to the public that they are monitoring such broadcasts and continue the necessary work within the framework of visual broadcasting principles. The full statement is as follows:
Attention to the Public!
Public interviews, presented under various names such as “Street Interviews” or “Citizen’s Opinion”, which we see from time to time on national television or published in some social media channels, are a universal press profession with their manipulative aspect of public opinion.— Ebubekir Şahin (@ebekirsahin) August 8, 2024
